Every so often an idea pops into my head and I can’t stop thinking about it. I just have to work on it. My wife says this is related to my undiagnosed ADHD, which maybe she’s right, but no matter what the cause lately my time has been diverted away from programming – towards BafflingBits.

What is BafflingBits?

Okay – this isn’t that new. It’s a rebrand of UselessSh!t which was an experiment I did last fall with YouTube Shorts. The thing is I really enjoy making these short-form videos. They’re a fun low stressful creative outlet and due to the nature of the content I’m creating I get to learn a ton of random trivia.

Not to mention the skills I’m able to pick up from researching topics, and script writing, to editing and cutting content down to as little as possible will go a long way towards making all my creative work better.

What’s My Goal?

Listen. Obviously, I don’t expect this to become a viral hit, but I’d be lying if I didn’t want it to grow into something. What that is exactly is still unclear, but I can safely say that it’s a long-term goal.

As for shorter term (i.e. more realistic goals), I want to use this to continue to get experience in front of the camera and build up speed in my editing workflow. It’s all about repetition and experience. If something comes of it that’s a bonus.

What does this mean for JohnDav?

This website remains the home of my personal brand. My place to discuss the things I’m interested in test out new ideas and share other random things. It’s a look behind the curtain of my life and a collection of all the things I do. So – you might see some BafflingBits here, but I wanted to keep that separate, mostly because I like the name.

As For Programming?

Now I love writing code and building small games. I love talking about SwiftUI and Swift Playgrounds, but that type of content is extremely time-consuming and labor-intensive. It’s not to say that the short-form content I’m making is low effort, but it’s definitely not on the same level as making videos about programming.

Not only do I have to work on the programming side of things, making sure the thing works, but then I have to record the process explaining what I did and why and finally edit it all together. At this current point in time, I’m definitely burnt out on it, but I’ve been here before and come back to it, so I have little doubt that I’ll be back again.

What About The Vault?

Okay I know I started writing a short story here a few months ago and then let it wither and die like an ignored house plant. Did I mention my wife says I have undiagnosed ADHD?

I still want to write a story. I love the idea of getting the ideas in my head into written form. The problem I have is that I’m always bouncing from one creative outlet to another. Programming, writing, music, video production… Maybe the solution is to actually listen to my wife and get checked out. Maybe the solution is to keep bouncing from idea to idea.

Regardless, I just wanted to take a few minutes and update you on what I’ve been up to these days. If you’re curious consider following BafflingBits on YouTube or TikTok and I’ll see you there. <3
